We can now provide ethical and responsible humpback whale watching tours. In association with local fisherman and villages of Kizimikazi, tours are conducted between End of June and beginning August when whales are typically found in the coastal or shelf waters.
In either a local jahazi or dhow you shall be shown these majestic creatures by an experienced fisherman and guide while at the same time receiving an indepth education on their conservation.
As an endangered species, the humpback whale is found in most oceans across the globe. Reaching lengths of 15 to 17 metres, the humpback whales are dark in colour with distinctive nodules on their rostrum, and have pectoral flippers that are nearly a third of their body length.
It is easily one of best known and easily recognizable larger whale species and is notorious for its frequent acrobatic behavior and its occasional tendency to approach vessels. At close range, humpback whales are easily distinguished from any other large whale by their remarkably long flippers, which are approximately one-third the length of the body
In recent years, many different humpback whales around Zanzibar have often approached boats for “friendly” encounters. This phenomenon has been increasing over the years, probably related to a new generation of whales curious about boats
Kizimkazi will soon become worldwide hub for humpbacks whales - definitely a valuable asset to the tourism industry and the local villagers alike
