Options include walking safaris, accompanied by armed Ranger and armed Guide; in 4x4 vehicles and exciting trips along the Rufiji River and through the adjoining lakes by a flat-bottomed boat-when the river water level permits. Species encountered include: hippo, crocodile (thousands!), buffalo, giraffe, elephant, zebras and wildebeest and, of course exceptional birdlife. Approaching the animals close up is more difficult than in the northern Parks and NCA.
Most of the camps are very luxury standard and situated on, or near, the river banks and can be visited by grazing hippo in the night.
A safari in the Selous is most attractive for visitors who have already been on other safaris and do not feel the need to have a particular sighting a species or to “tick” a bird and are looking for a different quality and a more measured, differently paced safari experience. The “feel”of the Selous safari is quite particular and the wild nature of the Reserve - much less visited - is a factor. The boat safaris are a very rewarding experience.
