This wild and more remote Rift Valley area is fascinating and still not often visited. It stretches from the shores of Lake Natron, 80 km north skirting the impressive “Gregory Rift” wall and due east of the boundary of the Serengeti and north-east of the NCA. It is designated a Game Controlled Area which encompasses the whole lake, a much researched major breeding area of the mysterious flamingo. Some of the hills and ancient rounded off volcanic peaks are located inside the NCA and the lake and its surrounds can be reached by a donkey trek for the more hardy visitor, accompanied by rangers and Maasaï guides, usually from Empakai
Crater special camp sites. Normally visitors arrive by 4x4 from the Malambo area, north of Olduvai, about 4 hours on quite rough and dusty tracks or by a spectacular drive along the Rift Valley from Manyara, skirting along the Gregory Rift wall and out over the austere and stunning plains (approximately 3 hours).
This lake, which is reduced to a vast stretch of salty mud during the dry season, extends over hundreds of km². It is the largest salt lake in the region.
With deposits of salts of several colors, it offers extraordinary landscapes which are completely different from those encountered elsewhere in Tanzania.
Natron lake hosts millions of flamingos, they find there suitable food and nesting conditions far from predators.
A large Maasaï population has settled in this small, unwelcoming area. What can visitors discover here? Villages, salt caravans fetching salt supplies from the lake deposits and large flocks kept and guarded by these iconic African warriors.
